EIA/TIA 586

EIA/TIA 586
A standard, jointly defined by the Electronic Industries Association and the Telecommunications Industry Association (EIA/TIA), for telecommunications wiring used in commercial buildings.
The standard is designed to do the following:
   • Specify a generic wiring system for all commercial buildings
   • Define media types, as well as connections and terminations
   • Provide a basis for interoperation between competing products and services in wiring, design, installation, and management
   • Allow for the wiring of a building before the definition of the products that will use that wiring, and allow for elegant future expansion
EIA/TIA 586 applies to all unshielded twisted-pair wiring that works with Ethernet, Token Ring, ISDN, and other networking systems.
